Cross-Connection Control Requirements: What is the purpose of a backflow assembly? Are there State or City requirements related to cross-connection control and/or the installation of a backflow prevention assembly?

When a connection is made to the public water system, the water should flow from the distribution system to the customer. However, it is possible under certain circumstances for the flow to be reversed and flow from the customer's plumbing system into the public water distribution system. This is called a "backflow", and if this situation occurs it is possible for the public water systems to be contaminated. If properly maintained and annually tested, the backflow prevention assembly is a mechanical device that will prevent backflow from occurring.
