Wastewater/Sewer Line Repair and Maintenance: What part of the wastewater/sewer line am I responsible for maintaining and repairing? What should I do if I have a sewer line problem?

Per Henderson Municipal Code (HMC) 14.04.020D: "The customer is responsible for all plumbing, piping, and appurtenances from the point of use to the service connection."

The wastewater service connection is the point where the private sewer lateral connects to the City's wastewater main. In most neighborhoods, the wastewater main is located beneath the street, and the sewer lateral runs from the home to the main.

City Responsibilities

The City of Henderson Department of Utility Services is responsible for:

  • Maintaining and repairing the public wastewater main.
  • Clearing blockages located within the City's wastewater main.
  • Repairing damages and covering cleanup costs associated with blockages occurring in the City's wastewater main.

Property Owner Responsibilities

Property owners are responsible for:

  • Maintaining and repairing the private sewer lateral from the service connection to the home, including all associated plumbing.
  • Repairing damages and covering cleanup costs when a blockage occurs in the private sewer lateral.
  • Hiring a qualified professional to periodically inspect the private sewer lateral and address maintenance issues before they become larger problems.
  • Removing root intrusion, clearing grease buildup, and repairing structural defects within the private sewer lateral.

The most common causes of sewer backups and overflows are grease buildup and root intrusion.

Please note that, in accordance with Henderson Municipal Code 11.08.010, work performed within the public right-of-way requires a permit from the City of Henderson Public Works Department.
