Water Meter Turn Off: How/where can I turn off my water meter?

1. Locate your water meter 2. Use a screwdriver to lift the lid off the water meter box (proceed to step 3 or 4). 3. In newer neighborhoods there may be two angle meter stop (AMS) valves, one on either side of the meter. An arrow showing water flow direction will be stamped on top of the AMS valves. Using a water key (available at hardware stores and home centers), an adjustable wrench, pliers, or your hand, turn the AMS valve closest to the house 90 degrees so the that arrow is perpendicular to the meter. Check to see if the water is off to the house. If it is not you may have to turn the AMS valve an additional 90 degrees so that the arrow pointing away from the meter. 4. In older neighborhoods, there will be one angle meter stop (AMS) valve on the street side of the meter. An arrow showing water flow direction will be stamped on top of the AMS valve. Using a water key (available at hardware stores and home centers), an adjustable wrench, or pliers, turn the AMS valve 90 degrees. Check to see if the water is off to the house. If it is not you may have to turn the AMS valve an additional 90 degrees so that the arrow pointing away from the meter.
5. To restore water service, turn the valve in the reverse direction to the original position. 6. Securely replace the meter box lid.
