FAQ

How can I change my child's last name?

The County of Orange does not manage legal name changes. For assistance, you will need to contact the Superior Court of Orange County.

According to the Superior Court's web site, a child cannot petition to have their name changed. Only a parent or guardian can do this. The appropriate forms need to be filed in the Probate clerk's office.

Name changes are heard on Fridays at 1:45 p.m. in Department L73 of the Superior Court of Orange County. Minors 12 years-of-age and older must attend the hearing.

To change the names of multiple children, families may petition together on one form.

There is a filing fee of $320.

To view the court's requirements, please read this document prior to publication.

A copy of the filed Order to Show Cause for Change of Name must be published in an adjudicated Orange County newspaper.
