What kinds of skill sets are required for performance auditors?

There are both general and specific skill sets required for Performance Auditors. The general skills required, as enumerated in the Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards, include: (1) an acknowledgement by an auditor that they have a responsibility to serve the public interest, (2) possessing a high degree of integrity that includes conducting their work with an attitude that is objective, fact-based, nonpartisan, and non-ideological with regard to audited entities and users of auditors' reports, (3) objectivity that includes being independent in fact and appearance, maintaining an attitude of impartiality, having intellectual honesty, and being free from conflicts of interest, (4) ensuring the proper uses of government information, resources, and positions, and (5) exhibiting professional behavior including putting forth an honest effort in the performance of duties and professional services in accordance with the relevant technical and professional standards. Specific skill sets include having expertise and knowledge of best practices in multiple areas such as: Finance, Accounting, Strategic and Organizational Development, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Operational Management Assessment and Management.
