FAQ

What are the types of inspections that may be performed?

At the time your permit was issued, you received a list of required inspections specific to your job. Please refer to the code number(s) that correspond with this information to determine what inspections are required and when these should be requested. Please contact the proper agency listed above, to request a time for your required inspections.

* As of December 28, 2010 the state has adopted a new building code. Contact department directly for information.

Sewer Laterals – Residential laterals are inspected by Department of Public Works personnel before covering. Commercial laterals are inspected by the Technical Services Department. This is a visual inspection of the pipe between the right of way and the building foundation. Residential laterals between the right of way and the main sewer are rodded by the inspectors at this time.

Water Service Lines – Residential water lines are inspected by Department of Public Works personnel before covering. Commercial laterals are inspected by Technical Services. As indicated with the permit, this is a visual inspection of the water line from the right of way line or water main, to the foundation.

Footings – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department before concrete is poured.

Soil Bearing Certification – Certification of soil condition by a licensed professional engineer prior to pouring of footings, in accordance with generally accepted engineering practices.

Concrete Foundation Certification – Prepared by a licensed professional architect or engineer prior to the erection of above grade walls.

Foundations – Inspected by Technical Services after waterproofing is applied and before backfill. Inspection of the foundation penetration of sewer laterals, water lines, and/or foundation drains is also done at this time.

Foundation Certification – Made by a licensed professional architect or engineer, prior to above grade construction.

F.E.M.A. Elevation Certificate – Made by a licensed professional at the completion of a foundation for buildings located in federally identified flood plains. This type of certification is to be made on the proper Federal Emergency Management Agency form, available from your surveyor, and must be reviewed and accepted by the Town of Greece prior to above grade construction.

Local Elevation Certificate – For buildings our of a flood plain requiring elevation certificates. May be made in the form of a letter, map, or similar document and must be reviewed and accepted by the Town prior to above grade construction.

Underground Plumbing – Inspections are performed by the Technical Services Department before covering underslab plumbing and foundation drains.

Pre-Insulation Inspection – Performed by the Technical Services Department when rough framing, rough heating, and rough plumbing installations are complete.

Rough Framing Inspections – Are performed by the Technical Services Department when all structural components of a building have been installed in conformance with the approved plans. Framing inspection for single family residential structures or additions is completed during the pre-insulation inspection.

Structural Steel Certification – Is the “as built” certification completed by a licensed professional that a building complies in all respect with codes, generally accepted standards, and the approved plans.

Tenant Separations – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department before ceiling installation. This is a visual inspection to confirm the tenant separation integrity.

Rated Separations – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department before ceiling installation and after the installation of mechanicals.

Rough Plumbing Inspections – Are performed by the Technical Services Department before covering. We recommend that these inspections be requested by the licensed plumber performing the plumbing work. Many plumbing installations (particularly commercial and industrial) require multiple inspections.

Plumber’s Wet Test Certification – Is a written certification submitted by a licensed plumber stating that a wet test has been completed. Forms are available at the Technical Services Department.

Gas System Certification – Is completed by the installer on a form supplied by the Technical Services Department stating that the piping was installed and tested in conformance with the provisions of the applicable codes, rules, and regulations.

Rough Heat Inspections – Are performed by the Technical Services Department of all duct work, before covering.

Masonry Fireplace Inspections – Are performed by the Technical Services Department at the time of the placement of the first flue and on completion of fireplace (ref. To Solid Fuel Burning Appliances & Chimneys).

Gas Fireplaces – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department before chase is enclosed so that the clearance between the unit and venting to combustible material is visible. Also inspected to manufacturer’s specifications, are the independent emergency key operated shut-off valve and interior and exterior distances to combustibles. Two inspections are required (ref. Gas Appliances and Chimneys).

Manufactured Fireplaces – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department before the chase is enclosed and when clearances between the unit, chimney, and combustible material is visible. Usually two inspections are required (ref. Solid Fuel Burning Appliances and Chimneys)

Wood Stoves – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department before the chase or existing opening is enclosed and when clearances between the unit, its chimney and combustible material is visible. Usually two inspections are required. See above for masonry fireplace chimney inspection requirements (ref Solid Fuel Burning Appliances & Chimneys).

Fireplace Inserts – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department to assure that the direct connection to the first flue and distances to combustibles is proper and in conjunction with manufacturer’s specifications. Usually two inspections are required (ref. Solid Fuel Burning Appliance & Chimneys).

Chimney Repairs – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department. This inspection is performed when the repair work is at a stage where the clearances to combustibles are visible.

Reline – (Masonry or manufactured) is inspected by the Technical Services Department upon completion of installation by qualified personnel (ref. Residential Gas Appliances & Venting).

Insulation – Is inspected by the Technical Services Department when complete, and before covering with drywall, etc.

Electrical – Inspections are performed by a licensed inspection agency. Please contact the agency of your choice for proper inspection. Refer to “Important Phone Numbers”.

Furnace Replacements – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department on completion of installation for proper venting, gas piping, and clearances to combustibles in accordance with NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, reference standards, manufacturer’s specifications, and generally accepted practices (ref. Residential Gas Appliances & Venting).

Water Heater Replacements – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department on completion of installation for proper venting, gas piping, water line connection, and clearances to combustibles in accordance with NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, reference standards, manufacturer’s specifications, and generally accepted practices (ref. Residential Gas Appliances & Venting).

Above Ground Pools – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department on completion of installation for minimum distance to grade and minimum distance to structures and overhead power lines. Documentation of approved electrical inspection should be submitted at this time (ref. Private Swimming Pools).

Inground Pools – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department on completion of installation for proper enclosure such as self-closing, self-latching gates and doors, minimum distance to structures, and overhead power lines. Documentation of approved electrical inspection should be submitted at this time (ref. Private Swimming Pools).

Pool Enclosures – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department for compliance to NYS Building Code regarding minimum heights to grade, self-closing, self-latching devices on gates and openings, construction detail of enclosure (ref. Private Swimming Pools).

Pool Decks – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department on completion of installation for structural support and proper enclosure to pool as per drawing details (ref. Decks & Pool Decks).

Decks – Are inspected by the Technical Services Department on completion of installation for structural support and code complying details, as per drawing (ref. Decks & Pool Decks).

Pre-finals – Inspections are performed by the Technical Services Department when project is substantially completed with owner/agent and contractor/applicant to establish a list of items or certifications needed for final inspection and approval.

Fire Marshal’s Office Certificate of Occupancy Checklist (Codes 62-69) – Upon your request for a Certificate of Occupancy, the Fire Marshal’s Office will inspect for the following or will need the documentation listed below before a Certificate of Occupancy can be issued. Please note that not all of the items listed may apply to your particular business, and that you should refer to the plan review sheet prepared by he Fire Marshal’s Office if you have a specific question.

All EXIT signage and emergency lighting to be in proper operation condition.

NOTE: Please call the Fire Marshal’s Office at 723-2369, to schedule your Certificate of Occupancy inspection. DO NOT schedule this inspection through any other office.

Exit Emergency Lights – Are inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office for emergency lighting to be on dedicated circuits with the circuit breakers controlling same clearly identified and emergency lighting to be in proper operating condition.

Exit Battery Packs – Are inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office. All EXIT signs to be provided with battery pack feature and all EXIT signage to be in proper operating condition.

Exit Sign Dedicated Circuit - Is inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office. All EXIT signage to be on dedicated circuits with the circuit breakers controlling same clearly identified.

Exit Door Swing – Is inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office. All exit doors to swing with path of exit travel and be in proper operating condition.

Panic Hardware – Is inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office. All panic hardware or other code related latch-releasing hardware on exit doors to be in proper operating condition.

Fire System Working – Are inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office for written documentation from contractor that live alarm system, fire/smoke detection system, sprinkler system, etc. was installed in conformity with all applicable code requirements. And that all components are in proper operating condition.

Fire Extinguishers – Are inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office. Portable fire extinguishers are to be of the appropriate rating and type, mounted in clearly visible and unobstructed locations, and supplied with current inspection tags from a qualified fire extinguisher servicing company.

Aisle Width – Is inspected by the Fire Marshal’s Office. Store fixtures to be arranged so that main aisle to exit doors through sales floor has a minimum of five (5) feet unobstructed width, and secondary aisles leading to main aisles have a minimum of forty four (44) inches unobstructed width.

Grease Trap Certification – Is made by either the manufacturer or a licensed professional for the “as built” device.

Oil Separator Certification – Is made by the manufacturer or a licensed professional.

Sediment Trap Certification – The “as built” installation by the manufacturer or licensed certified engineer.

Licensed Hauler Certification – Applicant must submit to the Technical Services Department a copy of a contract with a hauler holding a New York State solid waste license for all grease and oil separators with a capacity of 500 lbs. or greater.

Interior Finish Certification – Is made by the product manufacturer before final.

Smoke/Fire Detection Certification – By a New York State licensed alarm company before final, and during installation and certified to the Technical Services Department and/or the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Backflow Certification – By New York State Health Department certified tester and licensed design professional with proper Health Department form. Regulations vary. You will be advised at the time of permit application.

Monroe County Septic System Approval Final – By Monroe County Health Department before final.

Carpet Certification – By manufacturer per approved and listed test requirements.

Sprinkler Certification – By installer per N.F.P.A. standards.

Grading – By Department of Public Works. Grading completed as per plan. Includes all covenants and residential agreements with the Town of Greece. If complete, a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued. If grading cannot be completed due to seasonal conditions, a seasonal grading form will be issued.

Instrument Survey Maps – By licensed professional prior to final inspection. Two (2) original copies to be submitted.

Site Plan Compliance – Inspections are performed by Technical Services, per approved minor improvement on site plan, at the time of final. Incomplete items generally require a deposit form provided by the Technical Services Department.

Stop Work Order – Posted by the Technical Services Department for proceeding with an alteration, remodel, or construction of property without proper permits or approvals. A fee and fine may be levied.

Audit – Are performed by the Technical Services Department on commercial construction projects at any time during normal business hours, after permit issuance.

Final Inspection – All work completed as per plans.
